The Seattle Environmental Health Services Food Program aims to promote health in the community through regulation and education of food service establishments such as restaurants, coffee shops, grocery stores, etc.

The Food Protection Program oversees that food establishment owners, managers and employees have completed and passed a test on handling food safely and received a food worker card. The program has investigators who inspect establishments a few times a year and could also offer educational sessions for the establishment’s staff.

They launched a new food rating system back in 2017 in order to improve the way Seattle and King County Public Health evaluates food safety and conveys the information to the consumers. The rating system rates each food establishment using four different rating categories(emojis) which convey the level of cleanliness and sanitation result from the health inspection history of an establishment. The rating category is determined based on three main components: trend of food safety practices over time; scale of performance; zip code adjustments. Visit the King County website for detailed information regarding the Food Safety Rating System
