The New York City Health department inspects food establishments in order to ensure and promote compliance with food safety regulations. All restaurants in New York City are scheduled to be inspected at least once a year and the inspections are unannounced.

Health inspections are calculated using a demerit point system which translates into a letter health grade. An inspection score of 0 to 13 equals an A, 14 to 27 demerits is a B and 28 or more is a letter C. The City of New York requires restaurants to post their health grades in a place that is visible to the public. You can learn more about the inspection process, inspection cycle and restaurant grades on their website.

NYC Health launched the Open Restaurants program last year allowing restaurants for outdoor dining, go to the NYC interactive map to see the thousands of restaurants that have been approved.
